Franklin in the dark: "When Franklin's parents discover he's afraid of small dark places, including his own shell, Mrs. Turtle tells him the story of a little turtle just like him that was afraid of the very same thing." Some misunderstood comments lead Franklin to think he's on the threshold of adulthood. He sets his chilhood aside to prepare for the ultimate growth spurt." The incentive of winning a pen tempts Franklin to use unfair tactics during the spelling test.
